Yaws - Symptom, Treatment and cause of Yaws

Yaws Description

Bacterial infection that occurs in some third-world countries with very poor hygiene.

Yaws Cause

The Treponema pallidum bacterium is responsible, which is the same bacteria that causes syphilis. Transmitted from one person to another by close contact and poor personal cleanliness.

Yaws Symptom

Sores on the skin and in the nose and mouth, and inflamed lymph nodes in the armpits and groin.

Investigation

Diagnosed by taking swabs from sores.

Yaws Treatment

Antibiotics (eg. penicillin) and improved personal hygiene.

Complications

Sores may become large, ulcerate, penetrate to the bone and cause permanent disfigurement.

Prognosis of Yaws

Cured by antibiotics.
