Macular Degeneration Description
A common form of vision deterioration in the elderly.
Macular Degeneration Cause
The macular is the part of the retina at the back of the eye that is most sensitive to light. It degenerates because of a poor blood supply with advancing age, cholesterol build ups in arteries and diabetes.
Macular Degeneration Symptom
Gradual loss of central vision while peripheral vision may be normal.
Investigation
Diagnosed by examining the eye through an ophthalmoscope (magnifying light).
Macular Degeneration Treatment
No effective treatment.
Prognosis of Macular Degeneration
Usually very slowly progressive.
