Labyrinthitis Description
Inflammation or infection of the semicircular canals (labyrinth) in
the inner ear that control balance.
Labyrinthitis Cause
Viral, or rarely bacterial, infection of the labyrinth. Sometimes toxins or ear
damage may be responsible.
Labyrinthitis Symptom
Severe dizziness, abnormal eye movements, and nonexistent noises
may be heard.
Investigation
Caloric tests (alternating heat and cold in the outer ear canal)
induce worse dizziness.
Labyrinthitis Treatment
Medications to reduce inflammation and dizziness. Antibiotics
sometimes necessary.
Complications
Rarely, permanent damage to the balance mechanism may occur.
Prognosis of Labyrinthitis
Most settle in a few days, some persist for weeks.
