Faint - Symptom, Treatment and cause of Faint
Faint Description
(Syncope)
A sudden brief loss of consciousness.
Faint Cause
Stress, anxiety, fright, over exertion, lack of sleep, lack of food, heat, dehydration, lack of ventilation, prolonged standing, hormonal fluctuations.
Faint Symptom
Light headedness, dizziness, slight nausea, darkening of vision, and loss of. consciousness resulting in a fall or collapse. Usually occurs when standing, but sometimes when sitting.
Investigation
None usually necessary. If repeat attacks occur, other diseasesthat may cause this condition (eg. low blood sugar, low blood pressure, irregular heart beat, infections, anaemia) must be excluded by blood tests and electrocardiographs.
Faint Treatment
The patient usually recovers quickly once lying, but should only rise slowly and when completely well.
Complications
Injuries incurred during the fall.
Prognosis of Faint
The cause is usually obvious, and provided it can be prevented, recurrences are unlikely.
