Cogan Syndrome - Symptom, Treatment and cause of Cogan Syndrome
DESCRIPTION: Rare ear, eye and other organ inflammation with rapid onset in young adults.
CAUSE: Unknown.
SYMPTOMS: Eye surface inflammation, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), dizziness and deafness. Some patients develop a fever, enlarged tender lymph nodes, joint aches and pains, belly pain, enlarged spleen, black faeces from blood leaking into the bowel and heart abnormalities (eg.aortic valve disease).
INVESTIGATIONS: Non-specific blood tests showing inflammation are positive. No specific diagnostic test.
TREATMENT: Medications such as corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide.
PROGNOSIS: Variable self-limiting course
