Campylobacter Description
Intestinal infection that occurs worldwide in both developed and developing countries.
Campylobacter Cause
Bacterial infection of the intestine by Campylobacter jejuni which spreads from one person to another or from animals by water or food (particularly dairy products) that are contaminated by faeces. Incubation period of 2 to 6 days.
Campylobacter Symptom
Fever, cramping belly pains and watery diarrhoea.
Investigation
Culture of faeces can identify the responsible bacteria.
Campylobacter Treatment
A diet with minimal fat and plenty of fluids. If the infection is prolonged, antibiotics such as erythromycin may be used.
Complications
None serious.
Prognosis of Campylobacter
Usually settles without treatment in a few days, but rarely may persist for weeks.
