Callus - Symptom, Treatment and cause of Callus
Callus Description
Abnormal thickening of skin.
Callus Cause
Recurrent injury to, or rubbing of, an area of skin.
Callus Symptom
Local area of increased keratin (hard yellow skin) build up, usually over a bony prominence.
Investigation
None necessary.
Callus Treatment
Remove pressure if possible (eg. correct footwear, protective pads). Careful peeling away of the layers of keratin with a scalpel or apply salicylic acid ointment.
Complications
May become painful, and rarely infected, if trimmed excessively.
Prognosis of Callus
Usually persist long term, but controlled well by treatment.
