Barrett Description
(Barrett Oesophagitis)
Narrowing at the lower end of the oesophagus (gullet) from stomach acid reflux.
Barrett Cause
Reflux oesophagitis causes inflammation and ulceration of the lower part of the oesophagus. If left untreated for years, repeated irritation causes scarring and narrowing.
Barrett Syndrome Symptom
Difficult and painful swallowing as well as the symptoms of reflux oesophagitis.
Investigation
Barium meal X-ray or gastroscopy.
Barrett Treatment
Medication to control the acid reflux and dilation of the stricture by passing gradually larger dilators down the throat while the patient is anaesthetised. Occasionally more radical surgery is required.
Complications
If left untreated affected area may become cancerous.
Prognosis of Barrett Syndrome
Good if patient complies with treatment. Poor if cancer develops.
