Barlow Syndrome - Symptom, Treatment and cause of Barlow Syndrome
Barlow Syndrome Description
Heart valve abnormality.
Barlow Syndrome Cause
May be genetic. Mitral valve between the small (atrium) and large chambers (ventricle) on the left side of the heart slips out of place (prolapses).
Barlow Syndrome Symptom
Sometimes no symptoms, but may cause an irregular heart rhythm, fainting and transient ischaemic attacks (see separate entry).
Investigation
Diagnosed by hearing characteristic abnormal heart sound and echocardiography (form of ultrasound scan).
Barlow Syndrome Treatment
No treatment necessary if no symptoms. Beta-blocker tablets for mild symptoms. Surgical repair of valve if severe. Antibiotic cover to prevent endocarditis.
Complications
Endocarditis (internal heart infection) may occur with any dental procedure or other infection. Antibiotics are taken to prevent this.
Prognosis of Barlow Syndrome
Good.
