  • One or two ripe tomatoes taken early morning as a substitute for breakfast, for a couple of months, are considered a safe method of weight reduction. They also supply the food elements essential to preserve health.
  • Cabbage is considered to be an effective home remedy for obesity. It contains a valuable content called tartroric acid, which inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat.
  • Do not take any drugs without the any advice of a physician. These may lead to severe complication causing mental instability, confusion, stroke etc.
  • To maintain a desirable weight, dietary modifications need to be suitably made. It is advisable to have more protein as weight loss is often accompanied by loss of protein tissue as well as fat tissue. 20% of the total energy should be provided from good quality protein like low fat milk, whole pulses etc.
  • Each gram of alcohol provides 7kcal of energy, so alcohol must be taken in limited amounts. Even carbonated and malted beverages like cola and sweetened fruit juices should be avoided due to excessive calories.
  • Fluids should be promoted. Fresh juices, plain water and lemon drinks are good as they contain fewer calories.
  • Bulking agents like Isabgul add bulk to the diet and help in reducing the total food intake. Carrots and coriander leaves are rich in dietary fibre too.
  • Salt need not be restricted unless obesity is accompanied by oedema, hypertension and heart disease.
  • Foods and vegetables that are a good source of vitamins and minerals should be amply included in meals as they provide roughage that helps relieve constipation. Drumsticks, French beans, jackfruit, grapes, figs, peaches, phalsa and guava should be promoted.
