Varicella
What is Varicella?
Varicella is also known as Chickenpox. Varicella is an
acute, infectious, contagious disease
caused by the varicella-zoster virus, of the Herpesviridae family.It normally occurs in children under the age of 10 years, and
normally strike in late winter or spring. it is
characterized by fever,
a rash of vesicles on the face and body. It mainly spreads through
air, respiratory droplets which contains virus, contact with infected objects like
clothing and bedding. In United states
approximately 3 million cases occur each year.
Causes of Varicella
- Varicella is caused by
the varicella-zoster virus
Symptoms of Varicella
- Fever-
100-102°F
- Rash
appears as flat red splotches
- Feeling sick, tired, and sluggish
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Loss of appetite
What are the treatments for Varicella?
- Antiviral drug acyclovir may be recommended for people with varicella.
- Paracetamol or
ibuprofen
is used to reduce the fever.
- Calamine lotion may be helpful to
relieve the itchiness of the rash.
- Anti-itching drugs like diphenhydramine (Benadryl), hydroxyzine (Atarax) can be given.
- In certain conditions, post exposure prophylaxis with
Varicella Zoster Immune Globulin
(VZIG) is prescribed.
- Warm baths containing baking soda may help to control intense itching.
- varicella vaccine can be given to children between the age of
1-12 years.
- Trim fingernails to prevent infection from scratching the blisters.
