What is Uterine Cancer?

Uterine cancer is also known as Endometrial Cancer, Uterine corpus cancer. Uterine cancer involves cancerous growth of the endometrium (lining of the uterus). It occurs between the age of 60-70 years. It develops in the body of the womb, which is a hollow organ located in the lower abdomen. Following are the types of Uterine Cancer-

  • Adenocarcinoma
  • Adenosquamous Carcinoma
  • Papillary Serous Carcinoma
  • Clear Cell Carcinoma
  • Sarcomas

Causes of Uterine Cancer

  • Chronic exposure to estrogen will increase the risk.
  • Sometimes it may be caused by heredity.
  • Obesity can be a cause of Uterine Cancer

Symptoms of Uterine Cancer

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Painful urination
  • Pelvic pain
  • Blood in the stool or urine
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Weight loss

What are the treatments for Uterine Cancer?

  • Chemotherapy-In this therapy anti-cancer drugs are used to stop the growth of cancer cells, by killing the cancer cells. Patients may given the drugs orally or intravenously.
  • Radiotherapy-This therapy uses high energy rays ( high-level X-rays) to kill the cancer cells.
  • Hormonal Therapy-In this therapy the progestin is used to help to stop cancer cells from spreading to other parts of the body.
  • Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy-It is surgical process used to remove ovaries fallopian tubes.
  • Hysterectomy-It is surgical procedure in which uterus is removed through an incision in the abdomen. cervix, parts of the vagina, ovaries, lymph nodes may also be removed using this therapy.
