What is Toxic Shock Syndrome?
Toxic shock syndrome is also known as
TSS, Staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome. Toxic Shock Syndrome
an acute, rare, fatal
disease caused by
bacteria which release toxins into the body. It was first found in children in 1978.
It can quickly affect different organ systems such as the liver, and
kidneys, lungs.
It is
associated with tampon use
during menstruation, with skin infections, with
chickenpox rash
and
with the contraceptive sponge and diaphragm birth control methods.It can affect to anyone one women, children, and men.
Causes of Toxic Shock Syndrome
- Toxic shock syndrome is
is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria
- It is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, which causes strep throat .
Symptoms of Toxic Shock Syndrome
- Watery diarrhea
- Severe muscle aches or weakness
- Low blood pressure
- Fever more than 102°F (38.9°C)
- Redness of eyes, mouth, throat
- Sore throat
- Vomiting
- Rapid pulse
What are the treatments for Toxic Shock Syndrome?
- If
abscess is there then it is necessary to drain the pus from infected area.
- Provide IV fluids and medications to increase the blood pressure
- Dialysis-for severe
kidney problems
- Antibiotics-nafcillin, oxacillin, penicillin,or clindamycin are given.
- Debridement-It is surgical technique required if infection is found in deeper tissues.
