What is Thyroid Cancer?

Thyroid cancer is a cancer of the thyroid gland which is a butterfly-shaped gland lies at the base of your neck. Thyroid cancer occurs in any age group, but it most common after age 30. If treatment is not given thyroid cancer can spread. Thyroid nodules are more common in females than male, however, males have a greater risk of cancer which occurs in a thyroid nodule than females The types of thyroid cancer are-

  • Papillary cancer
  • Follicular cancer
  • Medullary cancer
  • Anaplastic cancer
  • Thyroid lymphoma

Causes of Thyroid Cancer

  • Thyroid cancer causes cause harm to other parts of the body through a process called metastasis.
  • Radiation exposure

Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer

  • Neck pain
  • Hoarseness or difficulty swallowing
  • Nodule in the thyroid region of the neck
  • Trouble breathing
  • Swollen glands

What are the treatments for Thyroid Cancer?

  • Hormone Therapy-In this therapy thyroid hormone is used to stop cancer cells from growing.
  • Chemotherapy-In this therapy anticancer medicines are used to kill the cancer cells.
  • Radioactive Iodine Therapy -After the surgery is completed Radioactive iodine is administered either in capsule or liquid form normally for 6 weeks.
  • Radiation therapy-In this therapy external cobalt beam radiation is given for 4 to 6 weeks.
  • surgery-
    • Total thyroidectomy-Entire thyroid is removed.
    • Thyroid lobectomy -One lobe of the thyroid gland is removed.
    • Lymph node dissection- lymph nodes in the neck which contain cancer are removed.
