Syphilis
What is Syphilis?
Syphilis is also known as
Lues.Syphilis is a
sexually transmitted disease
resulting from infection with the spirochete Treponema pallidum
bacteria. Syphilis causes
serious injury to an unborn baby. It also causes
lesions of
the central nervous system, heart,and the
cardiovascular system. It infects
the genital area, lips, mouth, or anus of both men and women. It is primarily characterized by
non painful chancre or sores in the mouth or anogenital area. It is transmitted from person to person
through direct contact with a syphilis sore. Syphilis has three stages-
- Primary Syphilis
- Secondary Syphilis
- Late (Tertiary) Syphilis
Causes of Syphilis
- Syphilis is caused by
the bacteria Treponema Pallidum .
- Syphilis can cause
miscarriage, death soon after birth, stillbirth.
Symptoms of Syphilis
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Weight loss
- Fever
- Memory loss
- Fatigue and a vague feeling of discomfort
- Patchy hair loss
- White patches on the tongue or the roof of the mouth
What are the treatments for Syphilis?
- Penicilin is used to treat the Syphilis. It is either injected
into a muscle or vein. Alternatives for penicilin is
doxycycline
100 mg PO bid
,
tetracycline 500 mg PO qid,
erythromycin base 500 mg PO qid
(Dose depends on the stage and symptoms of the Syphilis).
