What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Squamous is also known as Rodent ulcer, Cancer - skin - basal cell. There are 2 kinds of skin cancer-

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous Cell Carcinoma is most common type of skin cancer. It appears on the skin as a a bump, scaly ,as a red patch and also occurs in different organs such as lungs, mouth, esophagus, eye, cervix. It is characterized by red, scaly skin that becomes an open sore. It is common in United states.

Causes of Squamous Cell Carcinoma

  • Occurs when skin has suffered with burns ,scars, or with certain chemicals
  • Sun exposure

Symptoms of Squamous Cell Carcinoma

  • White or light pink skin bump
  • Painless nodule
  • Rough, scaly surface growing bump
  • Sore throat

What are the treatments for Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

  • Excision-The tumor is cut out together with a 3-millimeter to 10-millimeter margin of healthy tissue and the skin is stitched up. Sometimes skin grafting may be required if large area of the skin is removed.
  • Cryosurgery-In this liquid nitrogen is applied to the growth to freeze and kill abnormal cancer cells. Normally this treatment is useful for very small tumors.
  • Radiation- This therapy is used if cancer has spread to organs or lymph nodes.The cancer is destroyed with high-energy rays.
  • Laser therapy-Narrow beam of light is used to destroy cancer cells.
  • Mohs micrographic surgery-It is a microscopically controlled surgical technique which removes tumor.It's a common surgery for cancers on nose fingers eyelids
  • Topical 5 fluorouracil (5-FU )is a an anticancer medicine which is applied directly to the skin. Apply daily for several weeks.
