What is Rotavirus?

Rotavirus is virus which causes diarrhea and digestive problems and epithelial (lining) cells of the intestine in children under the age of 2 in United States .These viruses belongs to Revalidate family .Particles are 70 nm in diameter and have a buoyant density of 1.36 g/ml in CS. It also causes and are acute gastroenteritis transmitted fecal-orally. In the United States, it leads to outbreaks of diarrhea during the winter and spring.

Causes of Rotavirus

  • It causes acute gastroenteritis
  • Spreads easily through hand-to-mouth contact

Symptoms of Rotavirus

  • vomiting
  • Runny nose
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Lethargy or sleepiness

What are the treatments for Rotavirus?

  • Two vaccines for rotavirus are available which are given orally not given by injection - 3 doses at 2, 4 and 6 months of age. Rotarian - 2 doses at 2 and 4 months of age.
  • Encourage children's to drink plenty of fluids.
  • Treatment in the hospital with intravenous (IV) fluids should be given to bring the fluids and salt levels of the body to normal.
