What is Poliomyelitis?

Poliomyelitis is also known as Polio, Infantile paralysis .Poliomyelitis is a Acute, contagious, infectious viral disease of the central nervous system that can lead to paralysis caused by a virus called poliovirus (PV). Transmission of the poliovirus most often occurs by the fecal-oral route. Males and females of pediatric age are affected with equal frequency. Poliovirus mainly affects children.

Causes of Poliomyelitis

  • Objects, such as eating utensils, can also spread the virus.
  • when people do not wash their hands after eating or using the bathroom.

Symptoms of Poliomyelitis

  • Constipation.
  • Stiffness in the neck and back.
  • Vomiting.
  • Fever (up to 103° F).
  • abdominal pain .

What are the treatments for Poliomyelitis?

  • Hot packs or heating pads for muscle pain.
  • Physical therapy is given in cases of paralytic disease.
  • Corrective shoes.
  • Artificial ventilation may be required if a person's respiratory system is affected.
  • Minimal exertion and exercise.
  • Bed rest until fever is reduced.
