What is pituitary-tumors?

Pituitary-tumors is the abnormal development in pituitary gland which appears at the base of brain backside of nose and between ears. Pituitary gland is known as master gland that controls the secretion of hormones. They are either functioning or nonfunctioning. Sometimes there may be generation of hormones that affect growth and working of other glands like thyroid, gonads, and adrenal glands present in the body. Somewhat pituitary tumors may lead to cushing's disease in which generation of fat on neck, face and chest take place. Endocrine inactive tumor is the most common type of pituitary-tumors.

Causes of pituitary-tumors

  • Genetic abnormality is one of the main cause of pituitary-tumors.
  • It may also cause due to heredity problem but is about 3%.
  • It can occur due to p53 gene deletions.
  • Gs alpha mutations is one of the cause of pituitary-tumors.

Symptoms of pituitary-tumors

  • Headaches, vision problems, nausea and vomiting are the symptoms of pituitary-tumors.
  • Imbalance of hormone can impact failure of sexual function, problem in cessation of a woman's menstrual period, heat and cold tolerance, and reduces sperm production.
  • There may problems in the functions of different parts of body like kidneys, breasts and uterus.
  • It can affect body and skin in other ways.
  • Optic nerves compression lead to loss of vision can also take place.

What are the treatments for pituitary-tumors?

  • Tumor can remove by using surgical method.
  • Also make use of radiation therapy in which high power x-rays are use to destroy cancer cells and abnormal pituitary cells.
  • Tumor can also be remove by using hormone-replacement technique.
  • Use of medication like bromocriptine, prolactinoma.
  • There is also use of dopamine agonist therapy in which bromocriptine or cabergoline are most common agents.
  • There may also use of drugs like sandostatin, pergolide, stimate, hydrocortisone, synthroid, levoxyl, premarin, testosterone.
