What is Osgood Schlatter Disease?
Osgood Schlatter (oz-good shlot-ter) Disease is a painful swelling of the bump on the front, upper part of the lower leg bone, called the anterior tibial tubercle resulting into pain, swelling, or tenderness below the knee, caused due to frequent use and physical stress. It can be more commonly seen in athletic kids than in nonathletes and occurs in boys of ages 13 to 14 and girls of ages 11 to 12. Osgood-Schlatter disease is more common in boys. Osgood-Schlatter disease was discovered by two physicians Dr. Robert Osgood and Dr. Carl Schlatter, in 1903.
Osgood-Schlatter disease is also called as osteochondrosis.
Causes of Osgood Schlatter Disease
- Rapid skeletal growth
- Repetitive jumping sports
- Activities such as running, jumping or going up or down stairs
- Muscles are too tight in the front of the thigh, the back of the thigh, or in the calf
