Nose Bleed
Epistaxis, or bleeding from the nose, may occur if the nasal mucous membranes are dry, inflamed or injured.
Causes of Nose Bleed
Contributory factors include:
- dry air,
- colds,
- injury,
- blowing the nose hard,
- allergies,
- septal deviation and
- medications like aspirin.
The nasal passages are connected to the throat, to the bone sinuses, and through a duct to the inner angle of each eye. Nasal or throat infections can spread to the eyes and sinuses.
The larger sinuses, spaces in the bones of the head. There are other smaller sinuses.
Treatment of Nose Bleed
To stop the bleeding, try to clear the nose without using force. Apply firm pressure on the nose between fingers over the bleeding point, usually just behind the nostrils. Sit straight, head bent slightly forward to reduce blood flow into the throat, and breathe through the mouth. Decongestant drops also help.
Bleeding usually stops within 15 minutes. If bleeding is more profuse, apply pressure using an ice cube or a cloth pad dipped in cold water. If it does not stop in half an hour - and for recurrent bleeding, consult.
