What is Nasal Obstruction?
Nasal Obstruction is a common case of blocked nose means that partial or complete blockage of one or both of air passages of the nose leading to sinus problems, difficulty in breathing, headache, sleep disorders such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. It cuts down the physiologic functions of the nose – warming, humidifying and filtering the air. Nasal obstruction may be detected through full blood count, allergy tests, X-rays,
CT scan.
Causes of Nasal Obstruction
- Rhintis - swelling or inflammation of the lining of the nose
caused by allergies, irritants like smoke and pollution
- Adenoid hypotherapy
- Placement of foreign bodies such as cotton, bead, peanut, etc into the nose
- Deviated nasal septum
- Benign or malignant tumors
- Allergies
- Medicines to treat hypertension such as reserpine
- Birth control pills
- Over use of nasal drops or sprays
- Injuries due to nose picking, septal surgery, necrosis from cocaine use, etc.
- Infection or inflammation due to syphilis, leprosy, tuberculosis, Wegener's granulomatosis, lupus erythematosus, relapsing polychondritis, heavy metal poisoning
