Mumps
The mumps virus causes inflammation of the salivary glands, usually the parotids- which are situated in the cheeks below the ears. Swelling in one parotid gland may be followed by swelling in the other parotid and even other salivary glands. The swelling usually subsides within 2 weeks. Other symptoms include pain, fever and nausea.
Treatment of Mumps
Proper rest, good fluid intake and analgesics are the usual treatment. The infection can spread to other people, particularly during the early phase of upper respiratory symptoms.
Usually, there are no complications; but the virus can involve the pancreas, testes, ovaries, heart, brain etc. Consult, for worsening symptoms like rising fever, vomiting, pain elsewhere in the body; headache or neck stiffuess.
