Labyrinthitis
What is Labyrinthitis?
Labyrinthitis is a viral or bacterial infection of the fluid-containing chamber of the inner ear (vestibular labyrinth) resulting into inflammation, dizziness, loss of balance, vomiting, and temporary hearing loss. Labyrinthitis may cause a sudden onset of vertigo - a sensation of spinning or whirling. It can be seen in the female-to-male ratio as 1.5-2:1 and it can happen at any age.
Causes of Labyrinthitis
- Otitis media (ear infection)
- An upper respiratory infection such as flu or cold
- Smoking
- Drinking large amounts of alcohol
- Stress
- Fatigue
- Bacterial and viral infection
- Injury to the ear
- Allergies
- Tumours
- High doses of some drugs such as aspirin, furosemide, etc
