Keratitis
What is Keratitis?
Keratitis is an inflammation or irritation of the cornea of the eye caused due to infection, injuries, bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, vitamin A deficiency, and various allergic reactions. It can result into painful, red and watery eyes, photophobia, blurry vision. If left untreated, keratitis can lead to total blindness.
Types of Keratitis
- Superficial keratitis involving the superficial layers of the cornea.
- Deep keratitis involving deeper layers of the cornea.
- Amoebic keratitis caused by acanthamoeba usually seen in soft contact lens wearers.
- Bacterial keratitis caused by the bacteria staphylococcus aureas and pseudomonas aeruginosa due to injury and contact lense wearing.
- Fungal keratitis caused by the fungi such as aspergillus, penicillium, alternaria, cladosporium, and fusarium. It may be ulcerative or no ulcerative.
- Viral keratitis
- Herpes simplex keratitis caused by the herpes simplex virus resulting into dendritic ulcer.
- Herpes zoster keratitis
- Exposure keratitis
- Photokeratitis due to intense ultraviolet radiation exposure
- Interstitial keratitis
- Traumatic keratitis
