Hypersplenism
What is Hypersplenism?
Hypersplenism (hy-per-splen-ism) is a disorder caused due to enlargement of spleen resulting into rapid and premature destruction of red blood cells. It is most commonly seen in young children with sickle cell anaemia. This disease shows the symptoms of anaemia, infection, or bleeding. Hypersplenism can be detected through bone marrow biopsy, X-ray, computed tomography (CT) scan, or ultrasound. Hypersplenism has two types : primary and secondary.
Hypersplenism is also known by the names Banti's Disease, Banti's syndrome and sometimes enlarged spleen (splenomegaly).
Causes of Hypersplenism
- Spleen problems
- Chronic malaria
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Tuberculosis
- Polycythemia vera - a blood disorder
- Tumors
- Anemia
- Abnormalities found during birth (congenital) of portal, hepatic, or splenic veins
- Cellular infiltration
- Physically abnormality
