Hyperparathyroidism
What is Hyperparathyroidism?
Hyperparathyroidism is an uncontrollable, over secretion of parathyroid harmone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands present in the neck resulting into decrease in the calcium level from bone and increase in the calcium level in the blood, and urine and also leading to kidney stones. It also increases the production of phosphorus in the urine. It affects mostly women than men and of older age say above 60. The chance of getting hyperparathyroidism is 2 in 1,000. It is hereditary. Hyperparathyroidism was discovered by Fuller Albright in 1930.
There are three types of hyperparathyroidism : primary, secondary and tertiary.
Causes of Hyperparathyroidism
- Development of benign tumour on parathyroid glands
- Enlargement of parathyroid glands, called parathyroid hyperplasia
- Kidney problems
- Calcium feedback control system disorder
- Malabsorption problems and rickets
