Hydronephrosis
What is Hydronephrosis?
Hydronephrosis is a long lasting kidney disease due to swelling(dilation) of one or both kidneys caused by the accumulation of urine in the kidney which is functionally impaired. In the age of 20 to 60, women get more affected than men and in the age greater than 60, men get more affected than women.
Hydronephrosis is of two types unilateral hydronephrosis and bilateral hydronephrosis.
Hydronephrosis can be detected through, X-rays, ultrasound, crystocropy and catheterization of the ureter with dye injection, or computerized tomography (CT) scan.
Causes of Hydronephrosis
- Incorrect kidney development
- Blockage of the urinary system present at birth
- Kidney stones
- Kidney tumour
- Vesicoureteral reflux
- Blood cot
- Enlargement of the prostate gland
- Bladder cancer
- Nerve or muscles in the ureter or bladder disorder
- Scarring of the ureter due to injury, surgery or infection
