Colic- Picture, Symptoms, Cause and Treatment of Colic

What is Colic?

spasmodic, severe abdominal pain, which occurs in waves with brief interludes in between. Infantile colic is common in young babies in the first few months of life.

People commonly affected by Colic

digestive tract.

Symptoms of Colic

cramping, spasmodic waves of pain; usually the symptoms last for a fairly brief period. Infantile colic characteristically causes the baby to cry loudly for several hours, especially in the evening, and the legs may be drawn up in pain. Colic is painful but usually short-lived. A doctor should be consulted if the symptoms continue for a long time. Infantile colic can be alarming and parents often need reassurance that there is nothing seriously wrong with their baby. However, this condition does not require medical intervention.

Treatment of Colic

involves finding the most comfortable position to relieve the pain and resting until the symptoms subside. A hot-water bottle is also helpful. An attack of colic is generally not serious but can result in a twisting of the bowel that must receive immediate medical attention in hospital. Colic-type pain may also be caused by a tumor in the bowel, which again requires urgent medical treatment. Infantile colic is best coped with by general measures to try to comfort the baby. To try to prevent colic, the baby should be 'winded' during feeding and prevented from overfeeding or taking milk too quickly. Infantile colic generally stops after three or four months of age.

Cause of Colic

: the cause of colic is usually the presence of some indigestible food that causes the contraction of the intestinal muscles. Infantile colic is due to wind associated with feeding. In adults, provided that there is no more serious underlying cause, attacks are usually brief and infrequent.
