In a few days, the eruptions dry up and heal completely, normally without scarring. If the eyes are affected, there may be some scarring and damage to the eye. Treatment of Cold soresvarious ointments and topical preparations are available without prescription for the treatment of cold sores. Occasionally, a secondary bacterial infection occurs, which requires treatment with an antibiotic preparation. If the eyes are involved, the person requires treatment by an eye specialist and may be prescribed an antiviral agent such as acyclovir. Cause of Cold soresthe cause of the infection is a HERPES SIMPLEX virus that is contracted from a person already having the virus. The virus is passed on through close physical contact e.g. kissing, and so may affect several members of a family. It often lies dormant for a long period of time before flaring up to produce cold sores. These then tend to occur from time to time throughout life. A person may be more susceptible to infection if 'run-down' or under stress in any way. |
