Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis is a serious condition in which there is destruction of liver cells, fibrosis, and also areas of liver tissue regeneration. The causes include chemical toxins, excessive alcohol use (alcoholic cirrhosis), and massive, chronic or repeated viral infection. Among the contributing factors are other infections affecting the liver, nutritional deficiencies, certain drugs and some congenital disorders. Symptoms of CirrhosisThere may be no symptoms initially. Lab tests and imaging confirm the diagnosis. Treatment of CirrhosisCirrhosis requires hospitalization, life-saving treatment and countering of complications - in the hope that the liver will regenerate. Liver transplants are being selectively tried abroad and appear promising. Prevention of CirrhosisIt is a disease that should be prevented. Restrict alcohol intake. Avoid exertion during a hepatitis infection and excessive exertion in the convalescent period. A good diet with sufficient calories, protein and vitamins is required for a healthy liver. Consult for repeat attacks of jaundice. |
