Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is a serious condition in which there is destruction of liver cells, fibrosis, and also areas of liver tissue regeneration. The causes include chemical toxins, excessive alcohol use (alcoholic cirrhosis), and massive, chronic or repeated viral infection. Among the contributing factors are other infections affecting the liver, nutritional deficiencies, certain drugs and some congenital disorders.

Symptoms of Cirrhosis

There may be no symptoms initially.
As the condition worsens the symptoms include general weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss or wasting, nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, swelling of limbs, impotence, sterility, bleeding in the skin, gastrointestinal bleeding and vomiting blood. Jaundice is usually seen in later stages. There may be signs of vitamin deficiencies. The liver is enlarged, firm or hard. In some patients it shrinks. Fluid may collect in the abdomen and around the lungs. Poor liver functions and a disturbed metabolism can affect the brain, leading to disturbances in brain function, even delirium and coma.

Lab tests and imaging confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment of Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis requires hospitalization, life-saving treatment and countering of complications - in the hope that the liver will regenerate. Liver transplants are being selectively tried abroad and appear promising.

Prevention of Cirrhosis

It is a disease that should be prevented. Restrict alcohol intake. Avoid exertion during a hepatitis infection and excessive exertion in the convalescent period. A good diet with sufficient calories, protein and vitamins is required for a healthy liver. Consult for repeat attacks of jaundice.
