What is Cholecystitis or cholangitis ?

inflammation and infection of the gall bladder and its ducts (bile ducts). Inflammation of the bile ducts is called cholangitis.

People commonly affected by Cholecystitis

adults of both sexes and all age groups but less common In men. Rare in young people and children.

Symptoms of Cholecystitis

sharp, cramp-like pain in the upper part of the abdomen on the right-hand side. Pain may also be felt elsewhere. Abdominal discomfort, feverishness, nausea and vomiting, flatulence. Sometimes there may be jaundice and itching of the skin, and stools may be pale in color. A person with symptoms of cholecystitis should seek medical advice.

Treatment of Cholecystitis

mild attacks may only require rest in bed and a course of antibiotics until the symptoms subside. However, often admittance to hospital and a surgical operation to remove the gall bladder (cholecystectomy) is necessary.

Cause of Cholecystitis

the cause of cholecystitis is usually GALLSTONES causing blockage, inflammation and infection of the bile ducts. Hence, preventative measures to avoid the formation of gallstones are helpful e.g. eating a low-fat diet.
