Bursitis - Picture, Symptoms, Cause and Treatment of Bursitis
What is Bursitis?
inflammation of a bursa (a fluid-filled hollow surrounding and protecting a joint) e.g. housemaid's knee.
People commonly affected by Bursitis
adults of all age groups and both sexes.
Part of body involved with Bursitis
bursae of joints, especially the knees, elbows, shoulders, wrists, ankles.
Symptoms of Bursitis
pain, especially on moving the affected part, resulting in restriction of normal activity. Also, there may be some swelling and heat. A person with symptoms of bursitis should seek medical advice.
Treatment of Bursitis
the most important aspect of treatment is to rest the affected part and avoid the activity that caused the condition, if this is known. Also, an injection of a corticosteroid preparation into the bursa may be needed to reduce inflammation.
Cause of Bursitis
the cause may be obvious, as in the case of housemaid's knee, which is caused by excessive kneeling. Or there may be other repetitive activities that have put the joint under too much strain. However, sometimes the cause of the condition is less easy to discern. Occasionally, there may be infection in the bursa, which is then treated in the same way as an ABSCESS.
