Symptoms of Bronchitis
Typically, the symptoms begin with those of the common cold but develop with painful coughing, wheezing, throat and chest pains and the production of purulent (pus-containing) mucus. The person is likely to be feverish and feels generally unwell, and crackling, bubbling and wheezing sounds can be heard when listening to the chest. A person with symptoms of bronchitis should seek medical advice.
Treatment of Bronchitis
Consists of rest and the taking of analgesics or a cough preparation that can be purchased over the counter. Also, inhalation of steam and a heating pad or hot-water bottle on the chest are very effective. Antibiotics may be needed to combat infection.
Cause of Bronchitis
The cause of bronchitis is a viral and/or bacterial infection, and there is a tendency for the condition to recur. There is a risk of the development of chronic BRONCHITIS or pneumonia. Preventative measures include not smoking, avoiding as far as possible cold, damp conditions and polluted air, drinking plenty of fluids and eating a good diet. Bronchitis is more likely to develop in a person who is 'run-down', with a lower resistance to infections.
